Las Orquesta Escuelas: A Tango Revival
Description:
In the early 2000s, two important tango orchestra schools were created in Buenos Aires to teach the new generation of tango musicians the style of playing developed during tango’s golden era (1940-50s). The Orquesta Escuela de Emilio Balcarce and the Orquesta Escuela Orlando Goñi brought the tango masters out of retirement so that they could pass on their knowledge, which brought about the revival of tango music in Argentina. Over twenty years later, the effect of these schools can be felt not only in Argentina but throughout the world. The creators of these schools and others have developed international workshops where they teach tango’s performance practice. Just like in Argentina, these educational institutions have resulted in the creation of new ensembles, arrangements and compositions, and projects. This lecture discusses what are the foundations for a genre to be a revival music, and demonstrates the international impact the orquesta escuelas have had within the United States.

Today’s Women in Tango: Carving Out Spaces
Description:
For the past six years, Argentina has seen the feminist movement increase in drive and power. In 2015, the movement “Ni Una Menos” mobilized women to form collectives and to fight for their rights. Several important pieces of legislation have passed as a result of this movement, such as the “Ley De Ocupo” and the legalization of abortion. Tango music has also been influenced by this movement as more female tango musicians begin to form all-women ensembles, take on positions of leadership, engage with social change through protest and academic research, etc. Using an ethnomusicological approach, this lecture focuses on 14 different female, tango musicians to shed some insight on how today’s women in tango position themselves during this time period, and how they are carving out for themselves a space in a historically male-dominated genre.

Dialogue with Heyni Solera as she brings her sense of adventure and scholarship to explore what makes Argentine tango the genre that it is, how it has developed to present day and where it can take us in the future.
